About The Mascot

Welcome to the Mascot of Minneota.

We're a newspaper dating back to 1891, so have been providing over 125 years of publishing.

In July of 2009 the Minneota Mascot ended 66 years of operation under the Guttormsson family when Byron Higgin, Jeff and Julie Meyer of Pelican Rapids, MN purchased the paper from Jon Guttormsson.

Dating back to 1895 the Minneota Mascot was run by the Bjornson family. First Gunnar Bjornson, from 1895 to 1944, then with editors Hjalmar, Valdimar, Jon and Bjorn. Gunnar served as president of the Minnesota Editorial Association and was a member of the state legislature in 1913. He also was state chairman of the Republican Party.

Val Bjornson was eventually elected state treasurer in 1950. He kicked off his campaign for state treasurer at the mascot offices.

The Bjornson family eventualy sold The Minneota Mascot to Ragnar Guttormsson in 1943. He ran the newspaper until he turned it over to son Jon Guttormsson and the newspaper remained in the family until 2009.
Higgin became publisher in July of 2009 and changed the name to The Mascot.

He came to Minneota from Grantsburg, WI, where he'd been publisher of the Burnett County Sentinel for 13 years. Previously Higgin published the Clarkfield Advocate and the Cottonwood Tri-County News and also published the Granite Falls-Clarkfield Advocate-Tribune.

At the time he took over, he told Mascot readers he and Jon Guttormsson were concerned with the survival of The Mascot and wanted to do everything in their power to keep a newspaper in the community.

Minneota has a rich history of a community newspaper, and now The Mascot website joins the newspaper to keep the community informed.
