Jacob Hennen scores against Edgerton.

Hookshot highlights blowout

Mitchell Rost was clearly in a jam. He was surrounded by Edgerton Flying Dutchmen and there appeared no way out.
So what did he do?
He did a 180 degree turn — took the ball in one hand and hooked it toward the basket.
SWISH!
It set off the Minneota bench, who were clearly in Rost’s corner and enjoying every second of it — even Coach Dave Busselman. The team rose to their feet and cheered.
It was one of the special moments in an 82-42 Minneota trouncing of Edgerton that opened the season after just six practices in a fashion better described as a “scrimmage” than a basketball game.
“We were not in game shape,” said Coach Busselman, who was clearly pleased with the way his team responded so early in the season.
“This is why we wanted (to play) this game — to get in our basketball mode,” said the coach.
It was hardly time to refine the football muscles many of these state champs brought into the game.
But Busselman wants his team to run and push the ball and run the other team out of gas. And that “mode” he had a chance to use Tuesday night.
“Gentlemen, Start Your Engines!” is the rallying cry of this young, run and gun team.
And they did — with five players in double figures: Jacob Hennen with 16; Nolan Boerboom with 15; Logan Sussner and Isaac Hennen with 12 each and Thomas Hennen with 11.
They out-rebounded Edgerton 38-16 as Edgerton committed 22 turnovers to Minneota’s 14.
It was 56-22 at the half and never got much better for Edgerton.
And with such a big lead, up to 81-33 at one point — Coach Busselman was running his players in an out like it was a “Chinese Fire Drill.”
“It was tough to get all thoze different rotations going out there,” he said.
On defense, “We went zone to break out out faster. That’s why we started in a zone.”
He wants his team to use pressure defense and to push the ball up the court.
“They did the job. The idea is to speed up the game — play a faster game,” the said.
And he has just the horses he needs to gallop all over the place.
“We are low on numbers with Sam (Buysse) out (personal reasons),” said the coach.
But he got some nice help from the bench, including Alex Saltzer, a 6-0 sophomore who used his speed and quickness to make four steals; grab three rebounds and score four points.
“He’s tall and lanky and has long arms. He’s versatile and has a good attitude. He did a nice job," said the coach.
But amongst all that scoring and rebounding and fast clock the final nine minutes — there was that one, single shining, fun moment.
